As early as 800 CE, Islam became the dominant faith in West Africa, as well. Muslim traders and religious ambassadors of the faith charted the trade paths of West Africa, where the Ghanaian, the Mali, and the Songhai empires were mighty powers. They embraced Islam and became suppliers of African goods to North Africa and Europe.
