Sanskrit, the ancient Indo-European language, dominated high culture between approximately 1,000 BCE and 1,000 CE. It is considered to this day a classical tongue along with classical Arabic, Persian, Greek, and Latin and is performed at various ceremonies. It served as a key to learning for much of Indian history, especially among Brahmin and those of other castes who wished to serve in government.
