There are clouds in the sky, yet “there were patches of blue sky showing here and

there through the clouds that had met and piled above the other in the west facing her

window” (lines 24-26). The clouds present a metaphor for the problematic life Louise had

and the repression she feels in her marriage. The “patches of blue sky”, on the other hand are considered to be the symbol of hope for a better future.
