Renfield is in a very bad condition when the others find him. It is impossible that he can harm himself in this way. He is about to die and the others think Dracula is responsible for his death. When he is about to die, he confesses that Dracula has visited him. Dracula promises him that he will help him gain strength by consuming life in return for his obedience.
