Jus Soli
[Latin: law relating to the soil of one’s
country] The rule by which birth in a state
is sufficient to confer nationality, irrespective
of the nationality of one’s parents. Thus the
children of an alien, born on the territory of
the host state, would from their birth adopt
the nationality of that state. Most jurisdictions
now adopt a combination of jus soli and jus
sanguinis.
