Unlike Buddhism in other lands, it has a head who is also a political head, Dalai Lama. He has been in exile since 1959, since the arrival of Han Chinese and the direct annexation of half of Tibet by China. Because of the previous political system, this religious practice is sometimes called Lamaism.
