To increase literacy rates, the Communist party has switched from “traditional” Chinese characters to a “simplified” form of writing. Chinese children typically start their formal education at age two. However, Chinese citizens must attend school for at least nine years and this nine-year compulsory education is tuition-free. After this period, Chinese students must pay a small amount of tuition in middle and high school.
