The United States joined in that on December 8, 1941, following the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, on Oahu, Hawaii, by the Japanese air force the day before. In 1945, atomic bombs were thrown on two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Japan surrendered soon afterward on August 14, 1945.
