Abbasids ruled for over 500 years, the longest lasting caliphate in the history of Islamic Civilization. When Hulagu (Halaku Khan), the Mongol ruler, captured Baghdad, in 1258 CE, the Abbasid Caliphate ended. His armies of archers on horseback destroyed the city, including the valuable libraries.
