Whereas the Peace of Westphalia reinforced the sovereignty of all monarchies, it did not however establish monarchies for the first time in history. Monarchies such as Sweden and France preceded Westphalia. On the other hand, Westphalia signaled the principles of territoriality, religious autonomy, sovereignty, and sovereign legal equality in the international system.
